International Baccalaureate Program At Washburn Rural School District
Washburn Rural High School was authorized in 2012 as an International Baccalaureate World School Diploma Programme (IB). The first graduating class stood for their IB Diplomas in May of 2014. The two-year program enables high school students to engage in a challenging, international pre-university course of study.
Founded and headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland in 1968, this program has garnered international recognition by colleges and universities and currently is taught to 900,000 students in more than 3,000 schools in 141 countries.
Washburn Rural High School went through an extensive authorization process to train its teachers on the IB approach to learning and is one of only six Kansas schools to offer the IB program. Ongoing evaluations ensure that the IB Diploma standards are met and exceeded, which raises the standard of learning for the entire school, not just the students who participate in the IB program.
“We believe that hosting an International Baccalaureate program will offer new opportunities to students in the Topeka area as well as making the community more attractive to potential employees and new businesses alike. We are proud to partner with GO Topeka and others in this community-wide effort,” said Dr. Brenda Dietrich, Auburn-Washburn superintendent.
